(Here rests Henry Carlile, late Rector of
                    this church: a man clearly renowned for
                    his hospitality and distinguished charity.
                    Died fifth calends of November, year 1712,
                    aged 57.

"Cal." in the above Latin inscription is an abbreviation of
"Calendas" and the dating is,therefore, according to the Roman system.
The Calends of Novenber is the first day of November and the fifth
(quinto) calendas is the fifth day before the calends, counting the
calends as the first. Henry Carlile died not on 5th November but on
28th October.
